Muscovies are the only domesticated duck that aren't a descendant of the Mallard variety. They are from South America. Muscovies are also called the Barbary duck.
Wild Muscovies are still the original black, black and white. While domesticated Muscovies come in a variety of colors and patterns. They are the quietest of all poultry, so a wonderful choice for urban homesteading. They fly well and have a strong back claw they use to roost in trees. But unless they get injured or killed, they will usually fly home. If raised in an urban environment, keep one wing clipped to keep them from flying into neighbors yards. They spend their days eating bugs and are amazing for insect control. Males weight up to 17 lbs and females around 8 lbs. They have beautiful red caruncles on their beak and around their eyes. The boys are twice as large or more than the females by about 3 months old. The females are wonderful mothers and often hatch 16-20 in a clutch. The meat is highly sought after in certain cultures. It is not greasy and has been compared to veal in texture. |
